Posts for which SSC conducts exams: 
The SSC conducts open examinations regularly for posts for which large number of vacancies exist, these are: Graduate Level [Assistant Grade, Auditors/Jr.Accountants/Upper Division Clerks, Divisional Accountants, Inspectors of Income Tax/Central Excise, Sub-Inspectors in Central Police Organisations (CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP and SSB) and CBI, Section Officer (Commercial) and Section officer (Audit)] and Matric Level [Stenographer Grade 'C', Stenographer Grade 'D', Lower Division Clerks].

Scheme of examinations conducted by the SSC:
AThe Staff Selection Commission conducts Graduate Level Examination every year for various posts, qualification for which is graduation, and Combined Matric Level Examination for posts requiring matriculation qualification or High School. Those candidates who qualify in the prelims are required to appear for the Mains. Candidates qualifying in the mains have to appear for an Interview or Physical Efficiency Test (PET). Those qualifying in the Matric Level Main Exam are required to pass a skill test (typing or stenography). Some exams such as the Section Officers, Investigators etc, are held separately and no prelims are held for them.
Age limits and age relaxations for examinations conducted by SSC: 
Generally, the age limits are 18 to 27 years .The age concession in the upper age limit for SC/STs is 5 years, for OBCs it is 3 years and for physically handicapped candidates it is 10 years. For widows, divorced women and judicially separated women, the age limit is 35 years for UR category; 40 years for SC/ST women and 38 years for OBC women.

Candidates exempted from examination fees:
Scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, physically handicapped and Ex-servicemen candidates are exempted from payment of fees.

SYLLABUS: Part A:

a) General Intelligence:
It would include questions of both verbal and non verbal type. This component will include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, spatial visualization, spatial orientation, problem solving, analysis, judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetic reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning etc.


b) General Awareness: 
Questions in this component will be aimed at testing the candidates general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, economic scene, General polity and scientific research etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline

Part B:
Arithmetic: 
This part will include questions on problems relating to number system, computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions, relationships between numbers, fundamental arithmetical operations, percentage, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, use of tables and graphs, mensuration, time and distance, ratio and time etc.

NOTE:
The Commission has the discretion to fix different minimum qualifying standards in the papers of the Preliminary Examination taking into consideration among others, category-wise vacancies. The combined preliminary examination is meant to serve as a screening test only; the marks obtained in the Preliminary examination by the candidates who are declared qualified for admission to the Main/written examination will not be counted for determining their final order of merit. Only such candidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified in the preliminary examination in a year will be eligible for admission to the Main examination(s) of that year provided they are otherwise eligible for admission to the Main examination(s).
Combined Matric Level Preliminary Exam
The Combined Matric Level Preliminary exam is to test for selection of candidates for the Main Examination for the different categories of posts. The written exam will comprise one paper with two parts.

Note :-
The questions in all the tests will be Objective Multiple-Choice-Type. Candidates will be required to qualify in each of the two tests separately. The questions will be set in English and Hindi.

Main Examination
The Main Examination will be of descriptive-type.

Typewriting Test/Shorthand Test 
The candidates who qualify the Main Exam(s) will have to undergo a Typewriting Test/Stenography Test as the case may be of Main Examination(s).

Syllabus Part 1
General intelligence 
The syllabus for General Intelligence would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal types. The test may include questions on analogies, similarities, differences, space visualization, problem solving analysis, judgment, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, etc.

The test will also include questions designed to test the candidate abilities to deal with abstract ideas and symbols and their relationships, arithmetical computations and other analytical functions.


General Awareness 
Questions will be designed to test the ability of the candidate's general awareness of the environment around him and its application to the society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of an educated person.
The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture. Geography, Economic scene, Central Policy and Scientific Research.
Section Officer (Audit)
Scheme of selection consists of two parts A and B. Part A is written examination which comprises of two Papers i.e. Paper I and Paper II. Part B contains Personality Test/Interview.

NOTE: 
Paper I will be Objective Type Multiple Choice; and Paper II will be of conventional type.
Candidates have the option to answer Paper II either in Hindi or in English language.
Both the Papers I (Part B) & II will be in bilingual form (English & Hindi).

Commission will have full discretion to fix minimum qualifying marks in any of these paper or both the papers separately.

Paper II (Conventional Type) will be evaluated in respect of only those candidates who qualify in Paper I at the standard which may be decided by the Commission at its discretion.
Only those candidates, who secure in the written examination the minimum qualifying marks as may be fixed by the Commission at its discretion, would be eligible to be called for interview/personality test.

B - Part II: 
Personality Test/Interview (100 Marks)

The interview/personality test is structured in such a manner that the candidates interests, knowledge, various traits, aptitude, suitability etc. are probed among other things, through academic qualifications, experience, extra-curricular activities, general awareness/knowledge, depth of knowledge of the subjects studied (10+2 onwards), communicative skills and over-all personality etc.

Candidates called for interview/personality test have the option to converse either in Hindi or English language during the interview process.

Syllabus:
Paper-I: (Objective type multiple choice)
Part-A (English Language): Questions in this component will be designed to test the Candidate understanding and knowledge of English Language and will be based on error recognition, fill in the blanks (using verbs, preposition, articles etc.), vocabulary, spellings, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, sentence completion, phrases and idiomatic use of words, etc. There will be questions on close passage and comprehension of passages also. The standard of questions will be only of the 10+2 level.

Part-B (General Awareness): Questions in this component will be aimed at testing the candidate General Awareness of the environment around him and its application to the society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of an educated person. The test will also include questions pertaining to Sports, History, Culture, Geography, Economic scene, General polity, Indian Constitution, Scientific Research etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.


Paper II: (Conventional)
Arithmetic : This test will include questions on problems relating to Number Systems, Computation of Whole Numbers, Decimals and Fractions and relationship between Numbers, percentages, ratio and proportions, averages, estimation, use of table and graphs, mensuration, time and distance, ratio and time, Profit and loss, discount, interest, relations between numbers, fundamentals Arithmetical operations etc.
Central Police of Organizations Examination (for Sub-Inspector posts)
Scheme of Examination:
It would consist of two parts :

A) Part I- 500 marks and
B) Part II- Personality test/Interview 100 marks

Paper I (Objective Type Multiple choice) will be bilingual (in Hindi & English languages) and will have 200 questions.

Note 
Only those candidates who attain minimum qualifying standard in Part-I of the Examination (Written Examination), as may be fixed by the Commission in their discretion, and clear Physical Efficiency (Endurance) Test (PET) will be eligible to be called for Personality Test/Interview.

The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, and Geography, economic scene, General polity and scientific research.
Numerical Ability: The questions will be designed to test the ability of appropriate use of numbers and number sense of the candidate. The scope of the test will be the computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions and relationship between numbers, decimals and fractions, and relationships between numbers, It will test sense of order of magnitude, estimation or prediction for the solution to real life problems and knowledge of alternative computation procedure to find answers.

Paper- II GENERAL ENGLISH:
The candidates will be mainly tested in the following areas:-
1) Simple and plain use of English Language and clarity of expression.
2) Effective Communication skill in English with due economy of words.
Questions will be designed to test the candidate understanding and working knowledge of English language, their comprehension and their ability at communication skill. There will also be questions on precis writing, letter writing, paragraph or report writing etc.

PERSONALITY TEST/INTERVIEW: 100 Marks
The interview/personality test is structured in such a manner that the candidates interests, knowledge, various traits, aptitude, suitability etc. are probed among other things, through academic qualifications, experience, extra-curricular activities, general awareness/knowledge, depth of knowledge of the subjects studied (10+2 onwards), communicative skills and over-all personality etc.
